The Peninsula Sports Club's 50th annual Headliner's Night on Friday would have made Irving Thalberg proud. Much like those lauded in Thalberg's name at the Academy Awards for lifetime achievement, many of those honored by the club were recognized for prolonged success.

Former Newport News High School and University of Tennessee football star Jimmy Hahn received the Sports Person Emeritus award, given to a former local athlete not honored in the early years of the club. Hahn was an offensive lineman for Tennessee's 1951 national championship team before winning numerous decorations in two wars during a 22-year Army career.

Bob Moskowitz, a former Daily Press sportswriter, and also a Newport News High School graduate, became the first two-time winner of the Charles Karmosky Award, named for the late Daily Press sports editor. Moskowitz, a member of the sports club for 42 years, was selected for his "continuing efforts and time-consuming commitment" to several club projects.
